By East Texas Catholic staff and Catholic News Service reports In fulfilling his pledge made in October, on Jan. 31 Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, DD, shared with the Catholic faithful of the Diocese of Beaumont a letter and the names of the clergy who have credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.
One of the best in the state – that’s Jerrilynn Miller who teaches at Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont. She has been selected as the 2019 Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops’ High School Teacher of the Year.
Local deacons from across the diocese honored deceased deacons Jan. 27 at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica. The deacon memorial Mass included candle lighting, with each candle representing a deceased deacon or a deceased wife.

On Jan. 24, the Port Arthur International Seafarers’ Center, the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce, and Apostleship of the Sea announced that they have raised almost $26,000 for the local Coast Guard men and women due to the government shutdown.

Prayer and testimony supporting the call to end abortion were part of the Southeast Texas Rally for Life Jan. 20 at St. Anne Church, Beaumont. The celebration served as a contrast to the 46 th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on Jan. 22, 1973.
Students from St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday, Jan. 18, with a program on the importance of Dr. King’s career.
People of several faiths from across the United States are coming together at the nation’s capital and pray for an end to abortion at the National Prayer Vigil for Life Jan. 17-18. The event will be held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception.

If people have become estranged from God, feel lonely, abandoned or have realized their mistakes and are paralyzed by guilt, “we can still find the strength to pray” by starting with the word, “Father,” pronounced with the tenderness of a child, he said.
Bishop Curtis Guillory’s sister Zoeway died January 8 with family by her bedside. She had suffered a stroke in July and did not recover. Services will be Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Anne Church in Mallet.
“Brothers and sisters, this Epiphany I ask you: ‘Are you open?’ The Wise Men were open to where the Lord called them,” Father Kevin Fausz, CM, said at Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany Jan. 5 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Beaumont.

Brother Bernard Palmeri, CSC, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, helped Southeast Texans as a counselor for 17 years while serving the Diocese of Beaumont. He died Dec. 24 at the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence in Austin.
