By James Ramos Catholic News Service GRAPEVINE, Texas (CNS) — When Sister Lucero Espitia looked around the ballroom, she saw other people like herself. While the Disciple of Jesus sister from Aguascalientes, Mexico, didn’t see many other habited consecrated women religious like herself, she did see some 750 other Catholic young adults like herself buzzing with excitement as they sat down for dinner with a cross section of the 150 bishops attending the V Encuentro, or National Fifth Encuentro, in Grapevine.
Unsung stewards who gave humbly of themselves during Tropical Storm Harvey have been permanently honored with a bench placed outside Some Other Place. All of these good men and women were praised by Bishop Curtis Guillory during a blessing and dedication ceremony.
“Some Other Place feeds the hungry and feeds the homeless. And so I think it’s beautiful to have this connection,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said at a ceremony Sept. 19 to bless and dedicate a bench at Some Other Place that honors thousands of individuals who helped others during and after Tropical Storm Harvey.

In the statement, the bishops say they pledge to “heal and protect with every bit of the strength God provides us.” Turning to the Lord “When each of us was ordained as a bishop, we were told: ‘Keep watch over the whole flock in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you to shepherd the Church of God.’ We, the Administrative Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, assembled last week in Washington at this time of shame and sorrow.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, dedicated the new Creative Works Building at Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School Sept. 18. Art and woodshop classes will be held in the 4,800-square-foot building. The building was dedicated in honor of Linda and John Duplissey.
“It is the donor’s hope that those who make use of this building will be instilled with a sense of hard work, discover their creative skills and develop more-fully their potential now and for their future,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said as he dedicated the new Creative Works Building Sept. 18 at Msgr.
For the last two weeks, the Diocese of Beaumont has been celebrating the episcopacy of Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD. The Mass of Thanksgiving in Gratitude on Sept. 15 at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica was the culmination of six Masses that took place in parishes all across the diocese.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, recognized the service that Our Lady of Sorrows Church in China has provided to the faith community and to the Diocese of Beaumont during a Mass celebrating the parish’s 100th anniversary Sept. 15.

By Carol Glatz, Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis is calling the presidents of every Catholic bishops’ conference in the world to Rome Feb. 21-24 to discuss the prevention of the abuse of minors and vulnerable adults.
“We’ve been baptized, anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit to go forth. That’s our mission. That’s my mission,” said Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, at a Mass of Thanksgiving in Gratitude Sept. 11 at St. Joseph Church in Livingston.
“I think we have done as a partnership some wonderful things,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said at St. James Church, Port Arthur, during a Mass of Thanksgiving in Gratitude Sept. 10. Bishop Guillory said working with the faithful has resulted in a number of accomplishments for the Diocese of Beaumont, including the chapel for the Catholic Student Center at Lamar University, raising funds for Catholic education, the Convocation of Catholic Leaders as well as other achievements.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, recalled the joy of witnessing spiritual growth and working with the faithful at a Mass of Thanksgiving in Gratitude Sept. 7 at St. Mary Church, Orange. The Mass celebrated his 18 years of service for the Diocese of Beaumont.
“I tried to give it my all. But I have received so much more than I have given,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said about his 18 years of service at a Mass of Thanskgiving in Gratitude for his episcopacy Sept. 7 at St. Mary Church, Orange.
“People are hungry for the Lord. People want liturgies that feed them spiritually,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said about learning what parishioners were yearning for when he became bishop 18 years ago for the Diocese of Beaumont.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, recalled the joys and challenges of serving as bishop at a Mass of Thanksgiving in Gratitude Sept. 4 at St. Louis Church in Winnie. The Mass celebrated Bishop Guillory’s episcopal ministry serving the Diocese of Beaumont for 18 years.
Students from St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School visited the Diocese of Beaumont Pastoral Center Sept. 4 to wish Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, a belated happy birthday. Because of the holiday weekend, they were unable to visit him Sept. 1 on his birthday.
