Several years ago, 10 men heard the vocation call to be a permanent deacon. On Saturday, Aug. 27, those men took another step toward ordination. At a Mass at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica Chapel, Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, instituted the 10 as acolytes, presenting them with the vessels of hosts and wine as a symbol of their service at the altar.

They choose nearness over other considerations, including the quality of the homilies, according to a new Pew Research Center survey issued Aug. 23, “Choosing a New Church or House of Worship.” The survey said 76 percent of Catholics reported “location was an important factor in their choice of parish, reflecting the geographically based system by which Catholics typically associate with a local church.” It added, “Catholics and members of the historically black Protestant tradition are less likely to say they have sought a new congregation.
The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women gathered today at St. Louis, Winnie, for its annual meeting. The day included Mass, presentations and lunch. A highlight at lunch was the presentation to Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, of the completed burses and interest from the Catholic Clerical Student Fund.
