By Junno Arocho Esteves Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Mercy is not an abstract concept but a lifestyle that invites Christians to make an examination of conscience and ask themselves if they place the spiritual and material needs of others before their own, Pope Francis said.

Construction continues at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica to repair the damages from the lightning strike May 22. Damages are being further assessed and measurements are being taken to replace the cross over the south bell tower that exploded after being struck by lightning.

Father Clifton Labbé, S.V.D., celebrated his last Masses June 26 as pastor of St. Joseph, Livingston and St. Martin de Porres, Corrigan. Father Labbe is leaving the Diocese of Beaumont after 14 years and moving back to his hometown, Lafayette, La., to be the pastor at St. Anthony Parish.

Beaumont Bishop Curtis Guillory, S.V.D., says he is deeply saddened by the Supreme Court decision that puts women’s health at grave risk. Bishop Guillory joined his brother bishops in expressing his grave concern for the 5-3 decision that struck down Texas HB2, a law that protects women’s safety while seeking an abortion.

Many Southeast Texans from all walks of life joined Bishop Curtis Guillory, S.V.D., to celebrate Mass at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica June 13 for all those affected by the mass shooting in Orlando.

Bishop Curtis Guillory, S.V.D., is asking Southeast Texas Catholics and people of all faiths to join him in praying for the victims and those affected by Sunday’s shooting in Orlando. Bishop Guillory will celebrate the 12:10 p.m. Mass Monday, June 13, at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica in Downtown Beaumont.

The Catholic Press Association awards the East Texas Catholic second place for the 2013-2014 annual report by Juan Ceja, Kim Adams, Morline Guillory, Karen Gilman and Letty Lanza. The annual report is a comprehensive report on expenses and activities throughout the preceding fiscal year in the Diocese of Beaumont.

The Catholic bishops of Texas have named Jennifer Carr Allmon as the executive director of the Texas Catholic Conference, the first woman appointed to this TCC role. “In the 10 years that Jennifer Carr Allmon has served as the associate director of the Texas Catholic Conference, I have found her to be deeply committed to her Catholic faith and very knowledgeable on matters before the Texas legislature and the impact on the greater community,” said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Sister Anastasia Thibodeaux, C.V.I., died on June 2, 2016 at 99. She was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Cecilia, La., as the sixth of nine siblings, one boy and eight girls. She grew up in Port Arthur, where she received her elementary education, and on June 5, 1932, at the age of 15, she entered the Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament in Houston.
