VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The Year of Mercy and its series of papal reflections may be over, but compassion and acts of mercy must continue and become a part of everyone’s daily lives, Pope Francis said. “Let us commit ourselves to praying for each other so that the corporal and spiritual works of mercy increasingly become our way of life,” he said Nov. 30 during his general audience in the Vatican’s Paul VI hall.

“We must transform this world in the likeness of the kingdom of God,” said Bishop Curtis J. Guillory, SVD, as he began his homily at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica on Nov. 20, for the Solemn Pontifical Mass and closing of the Holy Door of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy.
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” said Bishop Curtis J. Guillory, SVD, as he recited part of the “Our Father” to the youth gathered at the Region 10 Youth Conference during a Nov. 20 Mass at Ford Arena in Beaumont.
BALTIMORE (CNS) — A new strategic plan adopted by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Nov. 15 during its fall general assembly reflects the efforts of Pope Francis to establish a more merciful and accompanying church, said the archbishop who led the planning process.
BALTIMORE—Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, was elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops during today’s annual fall General Assembly in Baltimore. Cardinal DiNardo has served as vice president of the USCCB since 2013.

A Kolbe retreat was held Nov. 11 through Nov. 13 at the Mark W. Stiles Unit, a Texas correctional facility near Beaumont. Inmates sing “I will raise you up,” with their hands reaching for God. They stand shoulder to shoulder, arms around each other, and joyously sing out loud from a place where you would least expect it.
The Jr. High Spectacular was held Nov. 12 at Infant Jesus in Lumberton. Junior High students from across the diocese attended. The event was offered by the Diocese Office of Youth Ministry and included various clergy, seminarians and lay ministers from across the diocese, workshops and Tommy McGrady, the campus minister from St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La.

“I fell in love with the ministry and life in the Diocese of Beaumont,” said Father Rodel V. Faller when talking about why he decided to become a United States citizen. Father Faller took the oath and became a citizen on Nov. 9 at Jack Brooks Federal Court in Beaumont.
