After months of adult confirmation classes and preparation, 28 candidates received the final sacrament of initiation, Confirmation, surrounded by their sponsors and loved ones at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, May 1.
Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, celebrated Mass and in his homily reminded the congregation that the Church is the friend that accompanies them on their spiritual journeys.
“God has created us as social beings,” he said. “We need people in our lives who will accompany us and encourage us on our spiritual journey. The Church is there to accompany us.”
The ceremony included Bishop Guillory asking the candidates to renew their Baptismal promises, showing that Baptism and Confirmation are connected, and extending his hands over them — signifying the calling down of the Holy Spirit. He also anointed each of the candidates with Chrism and gifted each Confirmand a step-by-step guide of the sacrament of Reconciliation to show the importance of going to confession.
For the adult Catholics who have received First Holy Communion but were not able to receive the sacrament of Confirmation as a youth in their parish, adult Confirmation classes are available at the diocesan level for ages 18 and up.
