Rite of Election and Continuing Call to Conversion Today we celebrate the Rite of Election, which is for the unbaptized, and the Continuing Call to Conversion, which is for the baptized coming from another Christian tradition or a Catholic who has had little catechetical formation and is in need of the remaining sacraments of initiation. Rite of Election The Rite of Election is a special gathering of catechumens with the bishop of the diocese to begin the immediate preparation during Lent for the sacraments of initiation. During this rite, the catechumens supported by their godparent (sponsor) write their name in the Book of the Elect and the bishop proclaims them as no longer catechumen, but now as the elect. The Bishop and the assembly pray for them and show their support. Call to Continuing Conversion This Continuing Call to Conversion is for those who are baptized, in most cases within another Christian tradition. In some cases, there are those baptized Catholics who are in need of Confirmation and Eucharist and who are not catechized. Representatives, mainly the RCIA Coordinator, call the names of the candidates from each parish. The Bishop and the assembly pray for them and show their support.
