Holy Thursday begins the Easter Triduum, which lasts until Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, the Triduum is liturgically one day unfolding the unity of Christ’s Paschal mystery. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, the priesthood and the commandment of love. During the Mass, the celebrant washes the feet of 12 individuals, commemorating Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. At the end of Mass, the altar is stripped and the Blessed Sacrament is taken to where the faithful come to pray as Jesus asked the disciples to pray with him in the garden of Gethsemane.
