ETC staff writer Jeff Dixon is accompanying the Southeast Texas delegation to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Kansas City. He will be sending updates and photos throughout the four-day trip.

On the bus ride home it was mostly quiet. A marathon of movies kept the youth occupied when they weren’t sleeping or sending texts to their parents and friends.

The arrival in Texas went mostly unnoticed by the youth, most of whom had fallen asleep once the sun went down. Our drive into Dallas though was met with much excitement.\

“I had a great time, but I’m extremely glad to be back in Texas and almost home,” Isaac Andrews of St. Jude Thaddeus, Beaumont, said.

When the buses hit Corsicana everyone stopped for dinner at their choice of Wendy’s or Taco Bell. After an unusually quick meal it was back on the bus. A little fog an hour outside of town slowed down the arrival, but the buses made it back safe and sound just before 1 a.m.

The youth exited the buses to meet parents and friends, collect their luggage and say goodbye to each other. After a weekend of workshops, worship and fun it was time to get home.

After a quiet bus ride full of naps the youth are eating at McDonalds in Oklahoma. Everyone is wide awake, hungry and eager to get home.

A couple of the teens took out a few moments for comments about NCYC.

“I was really impressed with the Mass and communion. It was incredible to see that and experience it for the first time,” said Austin Wyble from St. Charles Borromeo, Nederland.

"It was really awesome meeting other Catholics from other states. I traded and got a plush ear of corn from Illinois,” said Tamara Hajovsky, St. Joseph the Worker, Dayton.

After a semi-quick breakfast the buses were back on the road. Everyone was getting settled for the trip back – watching movies, talking or settling in to go to sleep
