Holy Week begins preparation for Easter
Palm Sunday, April 17, begins Holy Week leading up to the celebration of Christ’s rising on Easter Sunday April 24. During Holy Week are the Chrism Mass, celebrated April 19, Holy Thursday on April 21, Good Friday on April 22 and Holy Saturday on April 23. Below are liturgies for the week at our parishes and missions in Southeast Texas.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday. To commemorate Palm Sunday it is customary to have a blessing of palm leaves before Mass. The blessing ceremony, usually held outside the church includes the reading of a Gospel account of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and how the people placed palms on the ground in his path. This is followed by a procession into the church, with the participants holding the branches and sometimes placing them in front of the altar.
The days between Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday are known as Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday. The Gospels of these days recount events not all of which occurred on the corresponding days between Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and his Last Supper.
The Chrism Mass, whose texts the Roman Missal now gives under Holy Thursday, may be brought forward to one of these days, to facilitate participation by as many as possible of the clergy of the diocese together with the bishop. In this Mass the bishop blesses separate oils for the sick, used in Anointing of the Sick, for catechumens, used in Baptism and chrism, used in Baptism, but especially in Confirmation and Holy Orders, as well as in rites such as the blessing of an altar and a church.
On Holy Thursday the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated. The Mass stresses the Eucharist, the priesthood and the commandment of brotherly love. During the Mass the priest may wash the feet of several people, usually 12. Many parishes follow this with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Tenebrae.
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. It is a time of fasting for Catholics and a day of rest from work in several countries. There are no sacraments celebrated during this time except for penance and the anointing of the sick.
Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and the end of Lent. The celebration begins on the night of Holy Saturday with the Easter Vigil, a liturgy that begins in darkness with the blessing of the Easter Fire and the lighting of the Paschal candle.
