Southeast Texas preparing for hurricane season

Even with no threat of a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas is already getting Southeast Texans prepared for the upcoming hurricane season.

Catholic Charities along with the Humane Society, Red Cross, NOAA and the Salvation Army were on hand at the HEB on Dowlen in Beaumont June 6 handing out information on hurricane preparedness.

Randi Fertitta, director of Disaster, Trauma and Loss, and Joanna Schrock, Disaster, Trauma and Loss Coordinator for Catholic Charities, were on hand giving out a wealth of information to the public. Customers received information on how to prepare for a disaster, information on the national flood insurance program and some information on the FEMA application process in case there is another disaster.

“We had a lot of people come ask for specific information on what kind of things they need in a disaster kit and about whether or not they need flood insurance,” Fertitta said.

“We know that the people who came and took the time to look over the materials and pick up the information that will be helpful to them will have a better start for this season,” she said.

They also had a surplus of different types of disaster planning tools such as an emergency supply list which can help make an emergency kit.
