Society of the Divine Word

Society of the Divine Word (S.V.D.) religious community was founded in 1875 by Arnold Janssen in Holland and approved by the Vatican in 1905. Members include both priests and brothers. The main work of the society is evangelizing in non-Christian areas. To this end, they are involved in education on all levels and the publication of magazines and pamphlets. Emphasis is placed on the education of native clergy. In the United States, their ministry includes work among African-Americans. The generalate is located in Rome and the American headquarters is in Techny, Illinois.
